Analysis: Russia's Failure at Sochi Means More War for Syria

House used by PKK PYD terrorists as munitions depot discovered in Afrin

Yildirim said it remained "unclear" why the helicopter went down, adding that an investigation had been launched.

Syrian Kurdish fighters and Syrian state media say Turkish forces shelled a primary school and a water treatment and pumping plant in Syria's northern Afrin region.

Since Turkey began its attacks, 120 people have been killed, including 26 children and 17 women, according to a statement from the civil administration council in Afrin.

"The past week has been one of the bloodiest periods of the entire conflict, with wave after wave of deadly airstrikes leading to civilian casualties in areas of Eastern Ghouta and Idlib", Zeid said in a strongly worded statement.

In addition to Kemalbay, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office also issued warrants for 16 others on the grounds that they criticized a Turkish military incursion in northern Syria.

Operation Olive Branch was launched by Turkey on January 20 to remove the PKK/PYD/YPG/KCK and Daesh terrorists from Afrin in northwestern Syria.

The two areas have witnessed intense bombardment by Syrian forces this week resulting in hundreds of deaths.

At least 229 people have been killed in airstrikes targeting rebels in Eastern Ghouta over the last four days. These have welcomed Turkey's onslaught on the Kurdish militias since these have been responsible for brutal actions over the past three years, notably destroying villages, burning homes and killing residents in order to achieve demographic change in the region. The campaign followed Ankara's promises to "strangle" the new Border Security Force (BSF) in Syria.

The military also said, "utmost importance" is being placed on not harming any civilians.

More than 4,000 families are sheltering in basements and bunkers, according to Save the Children partners operating in the besieged enclave, the group said.

Meanwhile, Oleg Syromolotov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, said on Thursday that the developments in Afrin have been "provoked" by the action of the USA, accusing Washington of planning to supply "more weapons" to US-allied groups within Syria.

A United Nations commission, tasked with investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria, earlier this week condemned the upsurge of violence in Idlib and Ghouta, saying they "make a mockery" of the de-escalation agreement.
