The Indian were traditionally very close to the Palestinians but in recent years have developed very close ties to Israel as seen in the visit of Modi to Israel last year and Netanyahu's visit to India in January.
President Mahmoud Abbas, who described PM Modi as a "great guest", said Palestine was relying on India's great standing on the global stage to facilitate the peace process with Israel.
Prior to Prime Minister Modi, former President Pranab Mukherjee and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had visited Palestine in October 2015 and January 2016 respectively. Speaking at a media briefing in Ramallah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India and Palestine's relations have stood the test of time. "Our discussions today will give great strength to India-Jordan bilateral relations", Modi posted on Twitter.

Modi said his country "hopes for peace and stability in this region".
India has consistently voted in favour of resolutions supporting the Palestinian cause at global forums, an issue that has bothered strategic partner Israel.
He said: " I am glad that India and Palestine are cooperating extensively in key sectors such as technology, training and infrastructure development".
Despite Modi's personal camaraderie with Netanyahu, India voted in the UN General Assembly in December previous year against US President Donald Trump's unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Modi is also scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
India recognized the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) early on, and in the 1980s it also recognized the "State of Palestine". He will also hold a meeting there with the Indian community.
Mr Modi held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during which the latter sought India's help in achieving "just and desired peace" with Israel, adding that while he is ready to engage in negotiations with Israel, East Jerusalem should be the capital of Palestine.
The Temple Committee Members also presented the temple literature to the Crown Prince and Mr Modi.
PM has taken a short tour, accompanied by Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, of the Yasser Arafat Museum located adjacent to the Mausoleum.
