As they shook hands, the North and South Koreans spoke briefly.

The North Korean Supreme People's Assembly chief, Kim Young-nam, and leader Kim Jong-un's younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, on Saturday met with President Moon Jae-in for a luncheon.

North Korean defector Ji Seong-ho met and embraced Fred Warmbier, father of Otto Warmbier - the USA student who died days after his release from a North Korean prison.

United States Vice President Mike Pence also attended the opening ceremony but not the delegation talks, Reuters said.

"I am very confident, as President Trump is, that President Moon will continue to stand strongly with us in our extreme-pressure campaign [against North Korea to give up nuclear weapons]", Pence said later.

A senior US official said Pence and Moon, while watching speed skating together on Saturday night, discussed intensifying sanctions.

On Thursday, Seong-ho met and embraced Fred Warmbier, the father of Otto Warmbier - the United States student who died in 2016 after being imprisoned in North Korea for 17 months.

Moon met Kim Yo Jong - a close confidante of her brother and the first member of the dynasty to set foot in the South since the Korean War - and the North's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam at the Blue House in Seoul.

The vice president has struck a hard line against North Korea during his trip to the Olympics in an effort to call what White House officials have dubbed a "charm offensive" by the North. During the parade of nations, they stood only for the USA team.

North and South Korea are technically still at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

The outfits include Zhivago-style fur pillbox hats (one might say they look more like they'd belong to another authoritarian regime north of the Korean Peninsula), ruby red car-length coats with black fur stoles, black leather gloves, and booties.

Pence and the North Korean delegation, who both attended the Games opening ceremony, had no contact with each other.

The North Korean delegation to the PyeongChang Olympics has visited the South Korean Presidential Office, delivering an invitation for an inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang.
