Four elephants killed after being hit by train as they crossed the tracks

The engine of the train derailed due to the impact, but passengers were safe, NDTV reported.

Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson PJ Sharma said the pachyderms were hit by 15611 Guwahati-Silchar Fast Passenger train between stations Hawaipur and Lamshakhan under Lumding Division of NFR at around 2140 hours night.

On November 19 past year, two adult elephants were killed after being hit by speeding train near Thakurkuchi railway station located close to Guwahati.

The railway official claimed that the incident had taken place at a location where there was no notified elephant corridor.

The tracks cut across corridors used by the elephants as they move through the hilly forest state.

"Based on inputs received from forest department a speed restriction of 30kmph had been imposed and all trains were instructed to slow down while passing by".

Five elephants have reportedly died as a result of the dashing.

Locals also alleged that the train was on high speed and that the locals have also informed the nearest railway station about movement of elephants along the railway tracks. "A departmental inquiry has been ordered to find out whether all protocols were adhered", Sharma said. Train accidents, poisoning by farmers and electrocution are the main causes of elephant deaths, say forest department officials. A passenger train collided with a herd of elephants crossing the tracks, an official said yesterday, killing four of the endangered animals in the accident. The section was ultimately restored at 02.37 am on Sunday when the train left the site after the engine was rerailed.

Both forest department and NFR conceded that because of "close" coordination between officials from two sides many imminent mishaps were averted.

On December 10 past year six elephants were killed by a speeding train at Sonitpur district of Assam.
