The 17-year-old from Silverthorne, Colorado defeated Canadians Max Parrot and Mark McMorris after putting up a score of 87.16 in his third run. It's the second medal for McMorris, who put up a score of 85.20, narrowly behind Parrot's 86.00.
He wrapped up his winning run by stomping his board in the snow for a clean landing after a backside triple cork 1440 on his final leap.
The 17-year-old Gerard, the youngest in the competition, landed a flawless backside triple cork 1440 on his final run and despite Parrot landing the same trick on the final run of the day the judges favoured the American.
"I haven't had time for it to sink in yet", Gerard told reporters minutes after the final result.
"I don't really think I knew what the Olympics is", said Gerard, who claims he didn't grow up watching TV or fantasizing about taking Olympic runs.
While Gerard provided the highlight, American figure skater Bradie Tennell was impressive in the ladies' short program of the team event, helping the the Americans land a spot in the finals. "I feel like there's just always so much stuff going around that I want to pay attention to".
Quebec's Sebestien Toutant got things started Friday afternoon Pacific time, finishing third in the qualifying Heat 1 and moving on to the finals.
"I did expect it to hold a little longer than it did because that run had all the biggest tricks that all the other guys did".
The teen Gold medal victor said later: 'It feels incredible. I was really happy when I saw I came in as first.
These thoughts were still present after Sunday's final, won by American Redmond Gerard, as McMorris said he was just pleased to be healthy and riding once again. He also is the first Winter Games gold medalist born in the 2000s.
McMorris, who had been in the lead after two rounds, took his second straight Olympic slopestyle bronze less than a year after crashing into a tree, suffering a collapsed lung, ruptured spleen, fractured jaw, ribs, pelvis and left arm. He will be in action February 20 in the qualifying round for the Big Air snowboarding competition, which is making its Olympic debut.
