WEEI Suspends Christian Fauria for Racist Don Yee Impression
Fauriawas suspended Friday amid backlash over what he later described as a "horrible attempt at humor", in which he adopted a pseudo-Asian accent to impersonate Yee. A random fan, reportedly a guy who calls into WEEI as "Nick in Boston" duped Borges by making the columnist believe he was Yee in a text conversation.
Fauria chose to read the texts on-air, but with a twist, he made a decision to change his voice.
Radio station WEEI says in a statement it doesn't support host Christian Fauria's "insensitive and ill-conceived attempt at humor". In a segment during the show, I impersonated agent Don Yee in an insensitive and regrettable way, " he said from his account @christianfauria.
Eventually, the show played audio of the real Don Yee talking.
Fauria, a former Patriots tight end and co-host of the midday "Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria" show, mocked Yee while discussing reporter Ron Borges's erroneous story in Friday's BostonHerald. Yee is of Chinese descent, but was born and raised in California and has no accent.
Fauria apologized on Twitter and claimed he had reached out to Yee privately to do the same.
Undettered, Fauria continues reading the texts in the accent saying: 'It's more fun this way'. Fauria, a former National Football League tight end is the co-host of "Ordway, Merloni and Fauria". We regret Christian's commentary and we apologize to Mr. Yee and those offended by the segment. "I want to publicly apologize to Don and anyone in the audience who heard it", Fauria wrote. He's been suspended for 5 days.
Borges, citing anonymous sources, reported that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady would refuse to participate in off-season team activities if he did not get a contract matching the one given to his former backup Jimmy Garoppolo. Brady, who was a regular weekly guest on the show was so upset that he questioned whether he'd continue the weely interviews.
This was the second recent time WEEI came under fire for a host's comments about Tom Brady, or someone associated with him.
