Winter Olympics 2018: Strong winds postpone men's downhill

High winds risk moving Olympic men's downhill into Monday

Matthias Mayer

Waldner has already said that if the race can not be run it will be moved to Monday, weather permitting.

With their adrenaline pumping and their precisely curved skis helping them accelerate down the course, Olympic downhill skiers eclipse speeds of 80 to 95 miles per hour, though those speeds are not necessarily sustained throughout the entire run.

"Due to the strong wind and unfavourable forecast for today, the men's downhill is postponed", the International Ski Federation (FIS) announced.

If they were unable to run the downhill before Thursday, then it would replace the Super G in the schedule with the other speed race shifting to Friday, now a rest day. Her opening event can now still be broadcast on a night when television viewing is generally high. It may move to Sunday during NBC's primetime coverage, between the women's giant slalom events scheduled nearby.

The men's postponement was not a surprise to the competitors.

High winds create risks for racers.

"The wind is always stupid for us because firstly it makes the race a bit unfair and secondly it also makes it risky", said Germany's Thomas Dressen.

Canada's Manuel Osborne-Paradis said dealing with the weather went part and parcel with competing in an outdoor sport.

"Now", Rearick added, "the key is to take that energy and harness it, stay relaxed, and then be able to ramp back up".

That will be the first event here for another featured racer: Lindsey Vonn, the downhill champion of the 2010 Vancouver Games, who would be making her first Olympic appearance in eight years.
