"That is not realistic", Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters at the UN.

Turkey's state news agency, Anadolu, originally said the attack happened in Turkey's southern Hatay province, which borders Afrin to the west, a region that's become the focus of Turkey's latest military excursion into Syria. More than 1,100 YPG militants have been killed, according to Turkish military. You were not going to be in Manbij and not going to give the terrorist organization guns.

The OCHA said education activities in Idlib witnessed repeated interruptions due to the ongoing hostilities in the past two months.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said the United States supports the UN ceasefire call. A US military official earlier said about 100 of the attackers were killed in the overnight strike. Damascus has consistently denied using chemical weapons.

A punishing campaign by the Syrian government and Russian Federation has battered the Eastern Ghouta region near Damascus and the northwestern province of Idlib as President Bashar Assad's government tries to bring them under control.

Nauert said the supporting a United Nations call for a month-long "cessation of violence".

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis dismissed suggestions that the US military was stumbling into Syria's broader conflict.

The death toll mounted steadily throughout Thursday, with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights saying that 75 civilians had died by the evening.

Located in the outskirt of the capital Damascus, Eastern Ghouta was declared a de-escalation zone in which acts of aggression are forbidden.

Moayad al-Hafi, a rescue worker, said his team was targeted as they retrieved bodies near here. "Eastern Ghouta is experiencing a Middle Ages-style siege". The campaign followed Ankara's promises to "strangle" the new Border Security Force (BSF) in Syria. "In a unsafe situation in Syria, [Turkey] should not add war to war", he said.

The ministry urged the two sides to force the USA -led coalition to stop its crimes and attacks that have claimed the lives to thousands of civilians over the past three years.

YPG is the main fighting force of the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which played a key role in the ongoing fight against the Islamic State terror group in the region. It said the dead includes a medic and at least 10 children.

Eastern Ghouta is home to an estimated 400,000 people who have lived under crippling government siege since 2013.

That brought the civilian death toll since Monday to almost 230.

Two soldiers were killed in the incident. "These sieges involve the global crimes of indiscriminate bombardment and deliberate starvation of the civilian population", said Paulo Pinheiro, the chair of the commission.

The International Committee of the Red Cross in Syria expressed distress at the deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions in the area. Two of them were aboard a Turkish attack helicopter that crashed while on a mission over Afrin.

On February 8, more than 100 pro-Assad fighters were killed when US-backed coalition forces repelled an attack in eastern Syria.
