Amit Shah clarifies government's 'lukewarm' attitude to Tripura

12 February 2018, 04:49 | Devin Moran

Amit Shah's road show in Tripura, says BJP isn't afraid of violence

Home minister Rajnath Singh addresses a gathering during a rally in Agartala. The BJP has mounted its most serious challenge to capture power in Tripura for the first time

At another rally in Chawmanu, Shah accused the Left government of practising politics of violence. "Authorities here work under CPIM's pressure". Shah thanked the people of Tripura for their support and attendance in his rallies, and also said that through them, the BJP could achieve victory in the state and improve the lives of people collectively. He also accused the Left parties of spreading rumours that the state would be divided if the BJP comes to power and asserted that there would no division. In a state where the government is among the highest job generating agency, the lure of higher pay scales serves as a big pull for the state's employed as well as the job aspirants. The poverty and unemployment, however, increased in its 25 years reign.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) has a strong foothold in Tripura and is in power for the past 25 years.

Shah held a roadshow in the Gandhigram town ahead of the Assembly elections in the state on February 18.

The BJP is contesting for 51 out of the 60 Assembly seats, while its ally Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) is fighting in nine seats. Tripura has over 7 lakh educated unemployed, a figure, chief minister Manik Sarkar, had told TOI must be seen in the context of the rising problem of unemployment across the country.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which did not win even a single seat in the last polls, has been working hard to overthrow the CPI (M) rule this time.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had faced a jolt previous year in the state after six of its MLAs joined the BJP, has formed an alliance with the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) and the National Conference of Tripura for the upcoming election. "Girls will be educated for free in Tripura all the way from nursery school to Post Graduation", Shah added.
