5 Dead Following Johnson County Kentucky Shootings
Police investigate the deaths of four people and their suspected assailant, Joseph Nickell, in and near Paintsville, Ky., on Saturday.
"This has been a horrific murder spree", Sheriff Dwayne Price said in a news release posted on the department's Facebook page.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said it received a call about a shooting Saturday afternoon, with deputies arriving at the concerned residence to find two dead shooting victims in the kitchen. The sheriff's office, Kentucky State Police and Paintsville police searched for the suspect together and notified neighboring counties to be on the lookout for Nickell who was considered armed and unsafe.
Deputies got a call around 3:30 p.m. about a shooting in a rural home near the city of Paintsville.
According to investigators, a witness said the suspect left the scene in a black Toyota Camry.
Deputies, Paintsville Police Department Officers and KSP began a search for the suspect, who was considered to be armed and risky. Deputies say they could not find the suspect, but later received a tip that his vehicle was on Mill Street in Paintsville.
"The lives of four innocent victims were taken", Price said.
A 911 call about the auto led deputies to an apartment complex, where they found two women dead inside one of the units. Police say Nickell took his own life after committing the murders. This is one of the most disturbing acts of violence I have ever seen.
Sheriff Price further stated "We will continue to work this case in conjunction with the Kentucky State Police".
Joseph Nickell's body was found at the apartment in what authorities described as a murder-suicide.
