Abe and Moon show unity as Winter Games open
Moon shook hands with both Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam at the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, and they cheered as athletes from North and South entered the arena together behind a unification flag showing an unbroken Korean peninsula.
That's what makes Saturday's meeting so rare: Not only is Kim Yo Jong in the South for the first time ever, but she's chatting with South Korea's president inside the Blue House (South Korea's White House, so to speak).
A visit by Moon to the North would enable the first summit between leaders from the two Koreas since 2007, and would mark only the third inter-Korean summit to take place. Moon had replied, "Let's create the environment for that to be able to happen", according to the presidential Blue House.
The two countries have also formed a joint women's hockey team, which consists of 23 South Koreans and 12 North Koreans. "An early resumption of dialogue between the U.S. and the North is needed also for the development of the South-North Korean relationship", he said, according to his spokesman.
Leaders of the two Koreas have only meet twice since the peninsula was divided in 1948.
On Thursday, Pyongyang staged a military parade, where it displayed what appeared to be intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of delivering a nuclear warhead anywhere in the United States, in a thinly veiled threat to Washington.
Speaking on his way home from the Winter Olympics in South Korea, Mr Pence said there was "no daylight" between the two allies on the issue. That display of unity comes after sustained overtures made by South Korea's president Moon Jae-in. United States Vice-President Mike Pence was also present and led the U.S. delegation. Pence arrived late and stayed for just five minutes - and did not interact with the delegation from the North - at a Friday VIP reception for delegation leaders.
Mattis also said he doubted that the sporting rapprochement would undermine US-South Korean ties.
The meeting comes after the United States warned against engagement with Pyongyang.

North Korea's involvement in the Olympics has been sparse, with their last Winter Olympics coming in 2010 in Vancouver. They also made plans to attend a concert together on Sunday, to see a North Korean orchestra perform in Seoul .

From here, they appear to be chasing a ghost, albeit one that will stand across from them in flesh and blood this afternoon. We're happy with the guys that we had, and we're going to be happy with the guys that we have now.
