Young people are turning their backs on Facebook, according to a new report.
Meanwhile, more over-55s are signing up, with half a million new users expected to join by the end of the year. Facebook remains the biggest social media platform, however, with the number of regular users of the network hitting 1.54 billion - or 62.2% of all social media users.
In 2018, 2.2 million individuals ages 12 to 17, or 71 percent of social network users in this age bracket, will be using Facebook regularly, this represents a downgrade of eight percent over eMarketer's earlier forecast. eMarketer also reduced its estimates for Facebook usage among 18- to 24-year-olds by more than five percent.
Snapchat is also growing its user base in the United Kingdom with close to 43% of social network users predicted to log on in 2018, which is more than double its penetration rate from three years ago.
Facebook is on the decline in the United Kingdom as younger users head to rival Snapchat, new research has found.
According to the report, Instagram is expected to gain roughly 1.6 million young users up to 24 years old, but Snapchat will get the upper hand.
However, eMarketer does note that while Snapchat is popular mainly among youngsters right now, it could appeal to more age groups in the future.
Over the last two years, Facebook and its wider family of apps - which includes WhatsApp and Messenger as well as Instagram - have steadily deployed a range of features similar to some of the core features of Snapchat. It's now used by 43 per cent of the population, more than double what it was three years ago.
"This is the first time eMarketer has predicted a decline in the number of US Facebook users in those age groups", the company said.
