But at an event in Cape Town marking 28 years since Nelson Mandela was released from prison, the ANC's president and Zuma's deputy Cyril Ramaphosa told crowds that matters would be finalised at a national executive committee meeting tomorrow.

Their meeting is set to begin at 2pm, when the African National Congress (ANC)'s national executive committee is also due to start its special meeting in Pretoria.

Communications from an ANC official leaked on Friday suggested the party was planning to hold a meeting on Wednesday to sack Zuma but chose to hold off because negotiations between Zuma and Ramaphosa were going so well.

"We are obviously going to argue against the removal of the president, because we don't believe that this helps unity in the ANC". If the majority of ANC members decided Zuma and all associated with him can not rule the ANC, then all he has to do is step down, once and for all.

Cyril Ramaphosa said the matter had to be handled with "care and purpose". A court ruled previous year that the decision to drop the case - on the eve of Mr Zuma's election as South African president in 2009 - was "irrational" and the charges should be reinstated.

Ramaphosa also took the opportunity to stress the ANC's unity.

According to Dr Groenewald, the drawn-out negotiations over whether or not President Zuma must step down as president of the country is now damaging the economy more than removing Zuma as such.

South Africans are abuzz over what could be scandal-tainted President Jacob Zuma's final days in office.

The party lost control of key municipalities in 2016 elections.

And there are numerous possible charges that look likely to arise from a court-ordered inquiry into the "state capture" and influence-peddling that have developed under Zuma's rule.

Numerous recent graft allegations against Zuma are linked to the Guptas, a wealthy Indian business family accused of improperly winning government contracts and influencing cabinet appointments.

"We will put the interests of you, the people of South Africa, first".

And there is evidence that Ramaphosa's promise to clean up corruption is being fulfilled.

"The tide has turned and we are seeing the captured state house of cards come crashing down".

"He will resign or, if he is stupid about this, he will be forced out with nothing".

Zuma and Ramaphosa will reportedly conclude talks before the end of the weekend, and the discussions are focused on logistical and legal concerns, like support for his family and some of Zuma's legal issues. The ANC is Africa's most prominent liberation movement and many veterans of the long struggle against apartheid worry that the corruption allegations against Zuma are undermining its legacy.
