Amazon has figured out why your Alexa smart speaker is laughing at you
USA media reports said Amazon, the biggest online retail store, is investigating complaints about "Alexa", its smart personal assistant, following reports saying it starts laughing randomly.
"In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh.' We are changing that phrase to be 'Alexa, can you laugh?' which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance 'Alexa, laugh, ' " a spokesperson said in a statement.
The first reports of the laughter began to surface over the weekend. On Wednesday, March 7, Amazon confirmed that they were aware of the problem and that they are working to fix it.
"We are also changing Alexa's response from simply laughter to 'Sure, I can laugh, ' followed by laughter".
While this is a step in the right direction, it does not mean that Alexa will be able to answer multiple queries at once. Amazon says Alexa will only respond to a follow-up commands if she's "confident" that it is a legitimate request and not just background noise.
At least, that's what Amazon Echo owners say they've been hearing lately.
These incidents have also prompted claims from users saying Alexa speaks up at other times, again, without prompting from them.
Even though Alexa will now wait a little longer, the digital assistant can still only respond to one command at a time.
Market research indicates that 35.6 million Americans use voice-activated digital assistants, with Amazon devices now making up around 70 percent of the market, and that within the next four years, 55 percent of American households will own their own #Digital home assistant device.
