Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin secured the overall FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup globe for a second consecutive season after finishing third in Friday's giant slalom.
Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel won the event by 0.74 of a second, her first career victory. The Slovak skier finished the race in fourth.
Shiffrin, a two-time Olympian who won a gold medal in giant slalom in PyeongChang, is expected to compete in both giant slalom on Friday and slalom on Saturday. "It's hard to explain that feeling really", Shiffrin said, according to the Associated Press.
Shiffrin has won 10 races this season and 41 overall.
United States' Mikaela Shiffrin poses on the podium after placing third in Friday's World Cup giant slalom in Ofterschwang, Germany.
She was a clear favorite to successfully defend her maiden overall title since setting a World Cup record by winning the first five races of 2018. "I can really just enjoy the last races and not have to fight for points to win the globe". She previously won gold in slalom, her strongest discipline, at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Shiffrin's 603-point lead over Holdener is now insurmountable. "But nothing is impossible so I am going to stay focused".
"My biggest challenge this year has not been the Olympics or the (World Cup) overall or any of that, but getting motivated for these last races", Shiffrin said. Rebensburg leads the overall giant slalom standings by 92 points over Tessa Worley of France.
Shiffrin sits second, on 657, and Rebensburg third on 607.
