Hospitalizations associated with laboratory-confirmed cases of flu have dropped significantly for the second week in the state.
According to WIS, the total number of flu cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in sc dropped in the last week.
This year is the worst for influenza in almost a decade, with more than 14,000 New Jersey cases identified by lab tests and many more untested. This includes Puerto Rico, which is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
A record number of more than 4,200 residents have been hospitalized with the illness.
"Last year we were lucky, we had a fairly mild season, but even in the mild seasons people get sick and people die, so flu is always a killer and is always a nasty disease, and every winter our hospitals struggle with flu". Health officials said flu activity this year peaked in early February and has been declining ever since.
The states still experiencing high activity are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Wyoming.
The hospital is also seeing fewer flu-confirmed cases in its clinics this week. They are also available at the Myrtle Beach and Horry County health departments by calling 1-800-868-0404.
So far this season, five children have died from the flu.
Flus generally are more serious in the youngest and oldest and those with compromised immune systems, but the flu this year has sent more children than adults and seniors to emergency rooms for treatment. This percentage is above the epidemic threshold of 7.4 percent for week 7, and similar at this point to the 2014-1015 influenza season.
We urge community members who become ill with symptoms of the flu to contact their primary care provider, seek care at a walk-in clinic like Mission My Care Now, conduct an online visit with a doctor or visit a nearby urgent care facility. All 10 regions reported percentages of such outpatient visits at or above their region-specific baselines during week 9.
