Motorola, the Lenovo owned smartphone brand is facing some layoffs due to not so successful smartphones.
An anonymous source talking with Android Police said that Motorola is canceling development of the MotorolaMoto X5, which would have been the follow-up to the Moto X4 that came out previous year.
It was claimed in a report by Android Police, citing sources familiar with the case that the Moto X5 is being stranded by Lenovo as a effect of the layoffs. It says the Moto brand will be focussing on the E, G, and Z smartphone ranges for now, and even though the X series may make a comeback later on, it seems "unlikely in light of this news".
Motorola apparently cancels the Moto X5 amidst a large amount of layoffs and Moto Mod cutbacks
It was in late 2017 that Lenovo announced layoffs that would take place over the next few quarters, but without many details. This likely means that production of health tracker mods and gamepad mods may discontinue. According to a 9 to 5 Google report, between a third and half of its staffs in the engineering office at Chicago have been asked to leave. The official statement also added that the move that Lenovo announced previous year will continue to happen "over the next few quarters" impacting less than 2 percent of its workforce across the globe.
Speaking of Moto Mods, popular tipster Evan Blass tweeted a render of a new Virtual Viewer Moto Mod this week that will allow you to slide in your Moto Z phone. A post on the TheLayoff.com forum said the last working day for the affected employees will be April 6, 2018.
This became very plausible because Liangchen Checn, the creator of Keyboard Moto Mod implied that there is not a direct contact in Chicago, because of the cuts. This week's employment reductions are a continuation of that process.
