White House Unveils Gun and School Safety Proposals
In a call with reporters Sunday evening, administration officials described the plan as a fulfilment of Trump's call for action in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., last month that left 17 dead. The commission does not have a set timeline of when it will report its findings, although an official said it would be within one year.
"Today we are announcing meaningful actions, steps that can be taken right away to help protect students", DeVos said Sunday.
Trump has long criticized previous administrations for creating commissions to examine issues.
The administration would work with states to provide "rigorous firearms training" to "qualified volunteer school personnel", Andrew Bremberg, the director of the president's domestic policy council, said.
Speaking last month, President Trump had appeared indignant at the fact Americans could legally buy assault rifles from the age of 18 yet had to wait until 21 to buy handguns.
White House plan released Sunday does not address the minimum age for gun purchases.
WASHINGTON The White House said Sunday that the federal government will help provide "rigorous firearms training" for qualified volunteer school personnel as part of a package of policy changes he will propose after the February 14 mass shooting at Parklands Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., that is created to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System; and the STOP School Violence Act, which would authorize state grants to implement violence prevention training for teachers and students.
Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association (NEA), the largest professional union in the United States, has said that parents and educators "overwhelmingly reject the idea of arming school staff".
A senior administration official added that there are already "a multitude of programs that exist across the country where school personnel are trained in conjunction with state or local law enforcement".
President Donald Trump met with a lawyer who represented then-President Bill Clinton during the impeachment process and is talking with him about a role at the White House, The New York Timesreported Saturday. John Cornyn, R-Tex., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., that's created to improve the database used to check the backgrounds of would-be gun buyers.
The White House guns plan also includes support for a bill, known as the "Fix NICS" measure, created to improve background checks for gun purchases. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, which intends to improve the information going into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
She says Trump's effort is "a pragmatic plan" that will "dramatically" improve safety in schools.
President Trump said Thursday that he will impose tariffs of 25 percent and 10 percent on steel and aluminum imports, but reserves the "right to go up or down" in the future.
In terms of mental health resources, the president said he wanted to "increase integration of mental health, primary care, and family services, as well as support for programs that utilize court-ordered treatment".
Trump has also vowed to ban the use of bump stock devices that enable guns to fire like automatic weapons. And he called for the reform and expansion of mental health programs, as well as a full audit and review of the Federal Bureau of Investigation tip line.
