INX Media case: Post 14-day judicial custody, Karti Chidambaram files plea in Delhi court seeking separate cell in Tihar Jail

12 days Judicial Custody for Karti Chidambaram, No Separate Prison Cell: CBI Court

Karti Chidambaram was produced before Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday after his three-day CBI custody ended.

Although the Delhi High Court had granted Karti relief, by barring his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate till March 20, the barring of arrest was not applicable in the case of an arrest by the CBI. Karti, a son of senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram, was arrested on February 28 by the CBI and has been in its custody since.

The court dismissed Karti Chidambaram's appeal for an urgent hearing of his bail plea and scheduled it for March 15, PTI reported. The CBI in the court said, "During the entire period of police custody remand, Karti Chidambaram was evasive and non-cooperative".

Karti was produced in the court of special judge Sunil Rana, before whom CBI counsel VK Sharma moved an application for judicial custody.

Reacting to the probe agency's submission, defence counsel said that there is serious apprehension of threat to Karti Chidambaram's life as CBI is opposing his plea seeking security arrangements in Tihar Jail.

Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the special court that the CBI had recovered evidence to prove that Karti Chidambaram had direct links with Advantage Strategic, which allegedly received lakhs of rupees for facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approvals for INX Media and Aircel companies.

Karti Chidambaram's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom.

The matter will now come up for hearing on March 24.

When the CBI opposed the plea for separate cell on the ground that if at all there was any threat, it was to P Chidambaram and not his son, Krishnan expressed shock and said the CBI's objection has enhanced the threat perception. Today the CBI would appraise the court about the fresh details that have cropped up following the questioning of Karti's chartered accountant, Bhaskararaman.

He was arrested because Indrani Mukerjea and her husband, Peter Mukerjea had testified that they did grant bribe to him to issue the clearance. The arrested was based on the FIR that had been made against him in May, last year, which alleged that there were some discrepancies in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media. It, however, later revised the figure to United States dollars 1 million (about Rs 6.50 crore at the current exchange rate and Rs 4.50 crore in 2007).
