"The Maoist attack in Sukma, Chhattisgarh in which nine CRPF jawans lost their lives is "tragic".

The rebels used a lot of explosives to blow up the vehicle, a state police official said.

The personnel were onboard a mine protection vehicle which was passing through Kistaram, a naxal-dominated part of Sukma district.

And citing figures provided in the Lok Sabha, he said there have been 122 violent attacks this year and 14 jawans and 12 civilians have been killed.

"Eight paramilitary personnel, belonging to the 212th battalion, were killed in the blast", a paramilitary official was quoted as saying by PTI.

The suspected Maoists blew up their mine-protected vehicle (MPV) to make the explosion, an official said.

The attack came 11 days after 10 Naxals were killed in a forest area located on an inter-state border between Telangana and Chhattisgarh by joint contingents of police.

Aside from the nine soldiers who died in the latest attack, six were injured, four of whom are reported to be critical. "To those who have been injured, I wish a speedy recovery", he added. "Extra force has reached the spot, there is no firing at present", he said.

Earlier this month, the CRPF for the first time set up 3 permanent camps in the Abujhmadh forests in Chhattisgarh which are considered to be a Maoist hotbed, to launch "surgical" operations against the ultras, a year after the forces lost 37 personnel in 2 ambushes.

In April previous year, 25 CRPF jawans lost their lives in a Maoist attack. He said that the Maoists had targeted security personnel because they are angry over the developmental work being carried out in the area. Six police officials including an SHO were killed in the attack.

Calling the incident deeply distressing, Rajnath Singh said '"Today's IED blast in Sukma, Chhattisgarh is deeply distressing".

Those killed have been identified as assistant sub inspector Ram Krishna Singh Tomar, head constable Laxman and constables Ajay Kumar Yadav, Manoranjan Lenka, Jitendra Singh, Sobit Kumar Sharma, Manoj Kumar Singh, Dharmendra Yadav and Chandra H S. The injured are Madan Kumar and Rajesh Kumar.
