On the eve of Manchester United's UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg match against Sevilla, the 36-year old made the decision known when quizzed by journalists.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has announced that he will retire from football after the end of the current season.

"I had a problem during the Burton game during the second half", says the only English player other than Wayne Rooney to win the Premier League title, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, League Cup, FA Community Shield, UEFA Europa League and FIFA Club World Cup.

The 36-year-old, who won 34 caps for England, underwent a procedure in November to treat an irregular heart rhythm, after which he declared himself "healthy", but he has only played three times since.

"I think it is quite refreshing to look at Scott and see how he deals with it", the veteran said.

The Old Trafford club captain told a news conference on Monday: "There comes a time, wether you like it or you don't like it, that your body tells you it is time to stop playing football".

"For so long, it was kind of a given", said Carrick, the last remaining member of the victorious 2008 side.

It has always been expected that Carrick would hang up his boots at the end of the campaign - something the veteran confirmed on Tuesday (NZT), along with his intention to take up manager Mourinho's offer to join the coaching staff.

"You don't know what you've really got until you are tested". We're still talking about it, to be honest, so there's nothing totally confirmed as yet. "There were two or three times when I wondered whether it was worth still playing, but I soon got over that".

"I'm clear now, it took a bit of time to get over". But that quickly passed and I got back fit.

"I've just been training hard and trying to keep fit and have managed to play a few games so far and we'll see what happens towards the end of the season". "I wanted to finish on my own terms".
