Netflix's 'The Crown' Paid Its Queen Less Than Its Prince
13 March 2018, 11:56 | Regina Holmes
Outrage The Crown's Claire Foy earned less than her male co-star Matt Smith it has been revealed
She also acknowledged that Matt's experience on Doctor Who is what fueled the initial salary disparity.
The makers of the Netflix drama, speaking at a television conference in Jerusalem yesterday, claimed Smith was paid more because he was better known when the series was cast.
While "The Crown's" first two seasons featured a pay gap between Foy and Smith, Mackie assured the audience at INTV that the gap would no longer be in effect as the show moves into Season 3. However, Foy became a big-time star in her own right during the first season of The Crown, earning a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actor's Guild Award, both for best actress. Foy and Smith will be replaced in upcoming seasons of The Crown as it follows the lives of Queen Elizabeth and the royal family chronologically.
The producers said they've fixed it going into the future, and from now on no one will earn more than the actress playing the queen.
But that's a little too late for Foy, because the entire cast has been replaced by older actors for the third and fourth seasons.
"Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen", said Suzanne Mackie, one of the show's British producers, in comments reported by Variety. The showrunners are expected to make more announcements soon concerning who will be cast in major roles. Prior to landing his Prince Philip role, Matt played The Doctor on the BBC's Doctor Who from 2010 until 2014. Queen Elizabeth, 91, has a net worth of around $520 million, according to Wealth-X, a wealth insights firm, thanks to profits, real estate and collections that come from the Crown Estate and the Duke of Lancaster.
Smith, they added, made more because he'd already achieved fame due to his role in "Doctor Who". The success carried on into the second season, with Foy bringing home another SAG Award and earning another Golden Globe nomination. She received nominations at the BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Awards.
