China's Xi says looks forward to smooth US-North Korea talks

The prospective meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump may be a diversionary tactic by Pyongyang and the summit may fail because of the U.S. president's inability to grasp the issues, former State Department official Harvey Blaney told Sputnik.

It is finally happening, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be meeting face-to-face in May after months of exchange of threats, including the deployment of nuclear weapons against each other's territories, and months of bellicose posturing that brought the world to the brink of a nuclear war. "Through those talks, we need to get the North to take concrete action". They also said Mr Kim would allow US-South Korean military exercises to continue in the months before the meeting, which was originally slated for May.

"I am delighted that South Korea's efforts have made great progress in the overall Korean Peninsula situation and that close dialogue between NK and the U.S. has been achieved".

Some experts are concerned that North Korea could be seeking to delay worldwide action while strengthening its nuclear program.

Rhetoric in the North's state media has been tame, however, compared to threats past year that went as far as saying Pyongyang would fire missiles into the vicinity of the USA territory of Guam if provoked.

"He's marshalled unprecedented economic and diplomatic pressure on the regime in North Korea and this breakthrough - and we hope it is a breakthrough - is a result of the strong leadership the president has provided on the world stage", Pence said.

This opening comes from the initiative of South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, who has worked tirelessly to lessen tensions between North and South and to broker a meeting with US and North Korean officials. North Korea is a dictatorship and an impoverished country, crippled by a failed economic system and harsh worldwide sanctions. The Trump-Kim summit is supposed to take place by May. Curiously, North Korea's closely-controlled state-run TV news service didn't show any of the recent Winter Olympics.

"He has dealt with North Korea's nuclear program under the Obama administration and is one of those who understand North Korea well", he said.

The South Korean officials who met Kim travelled to Washington last week to relay his message and visited China on Monday to brief President Xi Jinping, who urged patience.

As Russia and China share a land border with the isolated nation, both countries play an important role in stabilising the conflict.

Yet China has long shared the USA objective of eliminating North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Secretary Tillerson also said it would take "some weeks" to arrange the meeting.

Joseph Yun, former United States special envoy to North Korea, recently retired from the Foreign Service "for personal reasons".

".but, again they - they cannot engage in missile testing, they cannot engage in nuclear testing and they can't publicly object to the U".

The Japanese leader, however, noted that the North's stated willingness to denuclearize appeared genuine.
