Tillerson out at secretary of state, to be replaced by CIA chief Pompeo

WASHINGTON DC- MARCH 13 President Donald Trump holds a meeting with members of his cabinet including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis in the Cabinet Room of the White House

After months of disputes with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, President Trump removed him Tuesday and nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to head the State Department.

"Mike Pompeo, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will become our new Secretary of State", the president tweeted.

Tillerson is the latest high-ranking official in the Trump administration to resign.

Trump also announced that Deputy Director of the CIA Gina Haspel take Pompeo's place as Director of the CIA, the first woman to be appointed to the job.

Tillerson's ouster was reported minutes before Trump's tweet by the Washington Post, though tensions between the two have simmered almost since Tillerson took the job in 2017.

Pompeo said in a statement, "If confirmed, I look forward to guiding the world's finest diplomatic corps in formulating and executing the President's foreign policy".

Tillerson had just returned from a shortened trip to Africa hours before Trump's announcement. Later that evening, Trump said he would meet Kim by May to discuss the future of North Korea's nuclear weapons program. And Tillerson once allegedly called Trump a "moron", a charge he never denied.

It was reported by the Washington Post that Mr Tillerson was informed of his dismissal several days ago.
