"I would have liked the doll to have traits more like Frida's, not this doll with light-colored eyes", said Kahlo's great-niece, Mara de Anda Romeo, in a statement to AFP per the BBC.

Barbie has expanded well beyond the ill-proportioned blonde doll that was released 58 years ago-but not everyone has been thrilled with Mattel's choices to expand the Barbie ranks.

"Taking to Instagram to express her disbelief in Mattel's direction, Hayek wrote: "#fridakahlo never tried to be or look like anyone else.

Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, Katherine Johnson and other accomplished women are getting their own Barbie dolls.

Certainly one family member took exception to Mattel's depiction of the artist, which eliminated her signature unibrow, a long single eyebrow that one commentator found emblematic of "her striking and handsome refusal to give in to certain sexist societal pressures".

Many on social media, including actor Salma Hayek, criticised the doll and complained it's more Barbie-like than Frida Kahlo-like.

But Kahlo's family soon issued a statement objecting to the doll.

Romeo says that her main concern with Mattel's doll is not just the legality of it, but also what she feels is an inaccurate representation of the late artist.

Romeo's lawyer Pablo Sangri said the dispute arose after the family established the Frida Kahlo Corporation in 2005, in partnership with another company called Casablanca Distributors.

"We will talk to them about regularizing this situation, and by regularizing I mean talking about the appearance of the doll, its characteristics, the history the doll should have to match what the artist really was", Sangri told the Associated Press.

But Mattel said the company had the correct permission to produce the likeness.

"The company Mattel does not have the proper authorization to use the image of Frida Kahlo", it said, threatening to take "necessary measures" against the California-based toymaker.

Mattel released a statement asserting that they worked on the doll's production with the Panama-based Frida Kahlo Corporation, which reportedly owns the rights to Kahlo's name. Since she died in 1954, her image has generated an array of consumer products, from tequila to lip gloss.

In its interpretation of Kahlo, the company erased the art icon's disability and famous unibrow.
