LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS — Episode 655
"American Idol" returned after almost two years with a solid debut on a different network on Sunday night, drawing 10.3 million viewers and getting a nod from many critics, Variety reported. With American Idol now on America's network, ABC, it was time to get things started with the American Idol 2018 auditions. Before last night's reboot, those two hours of ABC's Sunday night roster served as a placeholder for the 28-year-old "America's Funniest Home Videos" and the transplanted "Shark Tank".
According to Entertainment Weekly, Sunday's "Idol" premiere - technically the show's 16th season premiere - was the lowest in the franchise history.
Variety reports Nielsen overnight data shows the season premiere on Sunday had a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49 and 10.3 million viewers. Returning host Ryan Seacrest has been accused of sexual harassment by a former "E!" Michelle's boots weren't just made for walkin' but dancin' too. When Glaze leaned in to kiss her cheek, Perry quickly turned her head to achieve lip-to-lip contact, sending Glaze to the ground and delighting fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Season 15 averaged a 2.3 rating and 9.4 million viewers on Wednesdays and a 2.2 and 9.1 million viewers on Thursdays.
Later in the evening, ABC wisely used "Idol" as a springboard for its new drama "Deception", a high-concept curiosity about a disgraced magician who uses his powers to solve cases for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. One of the stars launched by "Idol", Kelly Clarkson, is now a panelist on NBC's "The Voice".
