There has never been a playing captain in Presidents Cup history for the U.S. The last playing captain in Ryder Cup history was Arnold Palmer in the 1963 match at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Tiger Woods' playing career is heading in a positive direction once again, and the 14-time major champion looks set to take up a non-playing role in next year's Presidents Cup as captain of the United States team.
Woods will be joined by Ernie Els, who will captain the global team during the matches at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.
The 2003 matches ended in a tie at 17 at Fancourt in South Africa, the home country of Els. The International team's only victory was in 1998 at Royal Melbourne.
Woods has finished in the top 15 in each of his last two PGA Tour starts. One of the birdies was a 44-foot putt he rolled in at the 17th to move within a shot of the lead with a hole to play, drawing a thunderous roar from the crowd. In gathering darkness that made it hard to read putts, Woods holed a double-breaking, 15-foot par putt on the third extra hole. After three extra holes between the two nominated players failed to break the deadlock, and with daylight fading fast, team captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed to share the cup.
Whilst Els might be a logical choice to be the next global team captain, Woods' anticipated appointment comes as more of a surprise, not least because he will be only 43 by the time the match takes place in Melbourne next year.
They also have battled plenty in tournaments.
Four-time major victor Ernie Els.
Off the course, Els is the player Woods sought out in the 1996 British Open when he was trying to decide whether to turn pro.
Woods will follow Fred Couples, Jay Haas and Steve Stricker as captain of the U.S. Presidents Cup team. The Internationals have just one cup win since the event's inception in 1994.
