Fox boss Gary NewmansaidBuffy is "the most ripe show [Fox has] for bringing back" during the INTV conference in Jerusalem, and told fans that the network have been discussing the possibility of a revival. You can never go back home to your childhood, and thus far it seems impossible to find the formula for rebuilding a show that's taking place two decades after it initially ran its course. Sarah Michelle Gellar was noticeably done with the show long before the final episode aired, and it's hard to imagine that Fox could drag her out of acting retirement for a job that she didn't want to do even back before she made a decision to focus on raising a family. Since the series wrapped with the highly-praised "Chosen", the world of Buffy has lived on in comics, with Whedon now returning for Season 12.
Newman, while saying that revivals obviously have a bigger initial draw than original programming, said Buffy was always at the top of the stack. Admittedly, we chased The X-Files for a while.
"It's something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with", he said. Buffy Summers: cheerleader, blonde, valley girl turned savior of the universe.
Besides, the various stars of "Buffy" have all moved on to new things.
Newman didn't specify a reboot or a revival, but clarified that he wasn't announcing anything official. So many shows have used Buffy The Vampire Slayer as a jumping off point at this point that a reboot would have to do something decidedly different to adapt itself to where the cultural conversation now lies.
"But yeah, the great thing is everybody looks great, and the other great thing is the show is about growing up". The show's conclusion works just fine, and it's hard to imagine a new series that would do the premise justice. The fanbase for Buffy exists as strongly as ever in terms of participating in discourse. Most of the time it starts with a creator coming in. It's not so that executives can take a product that ended on its own terms and try to make it new again.
