Jim Bowen dead The Bullseye star has died aged 80

Jim, a former deputy headmaster, began his career as a stand-up comedian in clubs in the 1960s, but became a household name when he hosted darts-based quiz show "Bullseye" in 1991.

The darts-themed show aired in the 1980s and 1990s, obtaining cult status among university students.

His catchphrase "look what you could have won" - was uttered to unlucky contestants who missed out on the show's star prize, although he claims he never uttered "super, smashing, great", which is also associated with him and the show.

He passed away this morning with wife Phyllis by his side but it is not clear how Bowen, who had suffered several strokes over the years, died.

In one of his final interviews, Jim told the Express: "Bullseye made me a well-known face. We are all shedding a tear", Pleus said.

Well, from all at Hot Press, have a smashing time up there with the starts pal!

Despite being all about the darts, Bullseye is best remembered for its catchy theme tune, Bowen's ever-present catchphrases and the consistent crapness of its prizes - with contestants getting to throw darts to win a random selection of tea sets and garden furniture before gambling it all to bag themselves a speedboat.

Jim Bowen's death was confirmed to BBC Radio Lancashire today by his wife Phyllis.

It attracted 17.5 million viewers at its peak.

He also enjoyed cameo roles in dramas such as Last Of The Summer Wine as well as roles in Jonathan Creek and in Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.
