Google Doodle: What is Pi day?
Today, Google doodle honors "Pi", the mathematical constant that never ends and never shows a pattern, with a pie. While MIT always posts its application decision letters online specifically on this date at 6.28 pm to honour the rival numbers pi and tau equally, Princeton hosts pie eating contests. Shaw chose March 14, or 3.14 - the first three digits of pi - as Pi Day.
March 14, 2018, is Pi Day - that's pi, not pie - and on Wednesday, Google marks the 30th anniversary of the math-inspired holiday with a special Doodle. On Pi Day's 30th anniversary, Google has honoured the day by creating a pie-themed doodle as the number has a delicious sounding name. Mathematicians classify pi as an irrational number whose decimal value extend to infinity, how ever for most calculation its approximate value as 3.14 is used. Pi, which is quite popular among students around the world as it represents the ratio of the circumference of any circle to its diameter. It's an important part of the foundation of mathematics, most importantly geometry, where pi is key to equations calculating the area of a circle, A = π r, and the volume of a cylinder, V = π rh. It was however, William Jones, a mathematician from Wales, who first gave the Greek letter its current mathematical definition. For instance, there are astounding formulae in which smaller and smaller numbers add up to pi and one of the earliest such infinite series to be discovered says that pi equals four times the sum 1 - 1⁄3 + 1⁄5 - 1⁄7 + 1⁄9 - 1⁄11 + ⋯.
