Iraqi prime minister reopens Kurdish airports to international flights

Iraq PM lifts flight ban to Kurdish region’s airports

Iraqi authorities said on Tuesday they were lifting a almost six-month air blockade imposed on Iraqi Kurdistan in response to its holding of an independence referendum.

Baghdad imposed the blockade in September after Iraqi Kurdistan voted for independence in a non-binding referendum.

Iraq is reopening airports in the country's Kurdish region to global flights after federal authority was restored at the hubs, according to a statement from Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Tuesday.

The formal lifting of the blockade will take place in the next few days, Abadi's spokesman Saad al-Hadithi told AFP.

The blockade was extended in December for two months and then renewed in February for another three months.

The Iraqi government has made a decision to reopen the airports of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, a report in Saudi Press Agency said.

"There is no truth in reports about an agreement between the central government and KRG on demarcating border and return of Peshmerga forces", he said.

Airports in Iraq's Kurdistan region have been reopened to worldwide flights following the restoration of federal authority over the two airports, said a report.

It also specified that the biometric system used in the Kurdistan Region's airports will be linked with the federal system.

Tensions rose between Baghdad and the region of Kurdistan after the Kurds held a controversial referendum last September to approve the independence of the Kurdistan region and the disputed areas. Around 25 million Kurds live in a territory that spans the borders of modern-day Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran and Armenia. Late previous year, following the failed independence push, federal forces recaptured the oilfields, severing a key financial lifeline for the Kurds.
