A contract at that level will position the New England Patriots for a possible high compensatory draft choice in 2019.

Butler's Patriots tenure was a wild ride, beginning with his iconic Super Bowl XLIX interception and ending with his still-mystifying benching in Super Bowl LII.

The Lions were interested in Butler as a No. 2 cornerback, but after he chose the Titans, they reached agreement on a two-year, $10.3 million contract with their No. 2 cornerback from last season, Nevin Lawson, per Jason La Canfora. It's a move that Belichick repeatedly said was made for football reasons.

Former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler intends to sign with the Titans when free agency officially begins tomorrow. A former Patriots executive in Jon Robinson runs the Titans front office, and he hired former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel to be his coach this year. In essence, Belichick decided that safety Jordan Richards (first half) and cornerback Johnson Bademosi (second half) gave the Patriots a better chance to win as the sixth defensive back in the dime package over Butler, who had played 98 percent of the defensive snaps in the regular season. The New Orleans Saints hosted Butler on a visit but never signed him to an offer sheet.

Butler was also part of the Patriots' Super Bowl LI 34-28 overtime victory against the Atlanta Falcons. He was a Pro Bowler in 2015 and has eight interceptions through four seasons in the league.

While there is a lot of stability on the Patriots roster from 2017 to 2018, the few big names that could depart are impact players.
