Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+: An insider's guide (free PDF)

14 March 2018, 04:50 | Cameron Gross

Upgraded Raspberry Pi 3 delivers more power and faster networking

The new Raspberry Pi has 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2

Now, a new revision named Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ is right on schedule for Pi Day. It's powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor which runs at 1.4GHz (compared to 1.2GHz for the Raspberry Pi 3's CPU). The B+ takes the 2016 Pi 3 Model B and ups the processing power and Wi-Fi speeds, alongside some other minor tweaks-all of which are outlined in detail below.

While the previous model B only supported 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, this new board comes with a dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless antenna.

While it's been significantly improved compared to its predecessor that was launched some two years ago, the Pi 3 Model B+ is an exact copy of the Pi 3 Model B and the Pi 2.

The board also offers improved communications performance via Gigabit Ethernet over USB 2.0, delivering a maximum throughput of 300Mbps through the board's four USB 2.0 ports; as well as retaining the extensive 40-pin GPIO (General Purpose Input Output) header connector.

Raspberry has just announced an update to its flagship board, the Raspberry Pi 3. We have been delighted by the take-up of the board by professional design engineers. Component manufacturers have created their own workarounds, but the Raspberry Pi Foundation will launch its own dedicated PoE HAT to make use of it in the near future.

PXE boot support. The Model B+ is the first Raspberry Pi to support PXE Ethernet boot, meaning that it can find a boot image over a connected network instead of from local storage. "We hope you like it as much as we do". Owing to the heat spreader and power integrity optimizations incorporated in it, this computer can reach higher clock frequencies at a reduced power consumption rate.

In short, the upgraded Pi promises more speed and power. For makers that is a very positive change as it allowed for the entire device to be certified as a radio module under FCC rules - with a significant reduction in the cost of conformance testing Raspberry Pi-based products as a knock-on effect.
