Suicide blast claims six lives in Raiwind, leaves 20 injured

At least 6 killed 30 injured in explosion near Raiwind

A powerful blast on Wednesday night near the residence of Pakistan's ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif in Lahore killed at least seven persons, including three policemen.

A year ago in February, a suicide attack on Mall Road of Lahore claimed as many as 14 lives including a celebrated police officer, weeks ahead of the final match of PSL that was played in Qaddafi Stadium.

Deputy Inspector General of police Haider Ashraf said the bomb exploded when the police were changing guards at the checkpoint just outside an annual religious congregation, where almost 80,000 people were in attendance. He said he believes the police were targeted. The casualties include policemen. The nature of the blast is not immediately clear. Police say they were investigating.

According to rescue officials, a caller who informed them about the incident said it was a cylinder blast.

He said the Rescue ambulances have shifted the injured to the Sharif medical complex and other nearby hospitals.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack and expressed his grief with families of injured and killed, stating courageous police officials lay down their lives in line of duty.

A spokesman for Jamaat-ur-Ahrar, a faction of the Tehrik-i-Taliban had telephoned Reuters and claimed responsibility for the February 14 attack.

In July previous year, 26 people, including nine policemen, were martyred and 58 others were injured in a suicide hit on Ferozepur Road.

Security has been tightened following the attack and all exit and entry points to the vicinity have been secured.

More than a dozen people also wounded after deadly explosion on the outskirts of Lahore.

In 2016, Lahore, 375km southeast of the capital Islamabad, suffered one of Pakistan's deadliest assaults when a suicide bomber in a park killed more than 70 people, including many children.
