United's European exit 'nothing new' for Mourinho

David De Gea

By the midway point of the second half, Sevilla had grown into the game - Ever Banega and Steven Nzonzi controlling the midfield - and United's players knew they were in a precarious situation.

He remarked: "They keep spending money and yet you hear they are supposedly three or four players away". They let the game go until a very risky period for us, which they did, and they scored a goal.

A United team with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, all of them with an abundance of tremendous attacking potential, were restrained to such an extent that they managed just four shots in two games. We had a few half-chances but we didn't score.

On the other hand, the visitors were slowly getting better at breaking with the ball, and came close to breaking the deadlock on multiple occasions, the lack of a good final pass holding them back. I expected this from them, this type of approach. The timing of Montella's decision to introduce Ben Yedder was not lucky, it was erudite.

"In the second-half I'm pleased Ben Yedder turned things around and it was he who made the difference". Out here, he played in the middle of the park with Matic and Fellaini and wasn't effective at all.

While Manchester City's duo of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling are third and fourth with 21 and 15 goals respectively.

I would like to make it succinctly clear that this defeat doesn't mean the end of the world for us. The game was won by the Andalusian's side desire to play football against the negative tactics employed by United's Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho who's game-plan appeared to be use long balls from De Gea looking for Fellaini or Lukaku.

Even if they win the competition, it will only serve to paper over some worrying cracks, as the EFL Cup and Europa League triumphs did previous year. Teams used to rely on their home form to see them through. "Here, he just looks like a stranger in this team".

Mourinho was a pioneer once upon a time. "Yes, this is true, but they do not have the FA Cup either".

At 27, Ben Yedder may be regarded as too old to earn a move to one of Europe's superpower clubs but he has proved his credentials in this season's Champions League.

Over the two legs, Sevilla were the better side and deserved the victory, with manager Vincenzo Montella and his substitutes running on to the pitch at the final whistle to celebrate.

Mourinho then spoke about how Liverpool are still in the Champions League, but they don't have the FA Cup.
