San Francisco: YouTube will begin displaying text from Wikipedia articles and other websites alongside some videos in a couple of weeks as the Google sister company attempts to combat hoaxes and conspiracy theories on the service, its chief executive said on Tuesday. "People can still watch the videos, but then they have access to additional information", Wojcicki said. "Our goal is to start with a list of internet conspiracies listed on the internet where there is a lot of active discussion on YouTube", she said, as reported by Wired.

The new features, which will be rolled out in the coming months, are part of a range of new initiatives that YouTube is considering to eradicate misinformation from the platform.

The video-sharing platform has faced criticism from victims and survivors of mass shootings for not only failing to clamp down on disinformation, but profiting from it, since YouTube takes a cut of the revenue from advertising on all videos.

"When there are videos that are focused around something that's a conspiracy, we will show as a companion unit next to the video information from Wikipedia", said Wojcicki.

Essentially, these "information cues" will be small cards that appear directl below videos in the YouTube app. So, YouTube will find it hard to ensure that the information in the suggested pages is factually correct. Furthermore, Wojcicki has stated that other sources of information will also be added aside from Wikipedia.

YouTube also has been criticized for using algorithms that promote conspiracy theories - but so far, it hasn't signaled any intent to modify its video-recommendation engine.
