Amazon completes Ring acquisition, drops video doorbell price to $99.99

Amazon Completes Ring Acquisition, Slashes Price On First-Gen Video Doorbell To $100

Amazon announced the Ring deal in February.

Amazon's is not reducing the price of Ring's monthly cloud subscription (that allows people to access any saved video captured by the doorbell).

Jamie Siminoff, CEO and Chief Inventor of Ring says, "Together with Amazon, we will accelerate our mission dramatically by connecting more neighbours globally and making our security devices and systems more affordable and accessible".

Amazon is quick to note in its press material that the Ring name is sticking around - for the time being, at least. You can order the Ring doorbell at the reduced price now, but the shipment is delayed to April 23 for the silver color.

Ring is dropping the price of its Video Doorbell to just $99.99, from $179.99 on and about $132.99 on Amazon.

The company also sells a second-generation version, called Video Doorbell 2, naturally, which offers a 1080P resolution. The company backed Ring through the Alexa Fund, which has become a bit of a funnel for future acquisitions of late, as it looks to leverage the Echo/Alexa's success into an all-out smart home takeover. This specific smart doorbell comes in 'Satin Nickel,' 'Polished Brass,' 'Antique Brass,' and 'Venetian Bronze.'

Ring, Blink, and Amazon Cloud Cam will continue operations under their respective brands.

Not super insightful, but about as much as one can expect from the head of a company recently purchased by Amazon.

Ring's mission is to reduce crime in neighborhoods by creating a Ring of Security around homes and communities with its suite of home security products.

"Ring's talented team has invented home security products and services that customers love", said Dave Limp, SVP of Amazon Devices and Services.
