Apple started trial production of iPhone 6s Plus in Bengaluru

'Make in India': iPhone 6s production to begin in few weeks; will witness lower prices

As per the senior executives, the delay in price correction is due to facility's inability to meet the "entire requirement" of the iPhone 6s Plus model in India with the major chunk being imports of units manufactured in China.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) manufacturer Wistron has begun trial production of the iPhone 6s Plus with commercial production coming within the next couple of weeks, according to Economic Times.

Research indicates that the iPhone 6 series contributes to one-third of all iPhone sales in India, more than the 15% claimed by the iPhone SE. So what real benefit will Apple have in producing the iPhone 6s Plus?

But the source told IBTimes India, that the model, which the company is planning to roll out from the Bengaluru plant is the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s model and not the iPhone 6s Plus. Industry executives said Apple has also started discussion with its component vendors and contract manufacturers like Flex, Foxconn and Wistron to expand local sourcing, including components. "Eventually, as the local capacity gains scale the prices will get corrected".

Apparently, it is believed that the locally produced iPhone 6s Plus can bring down prices of the phone by five to seven percent.

Earlier this month, the government imposed a 10% custom duty on components like printed circuit boards populated with memory and chips, camera modules and connectors.

This measure forced Apple to seek methods to keep the price of its phone down and stay competitive.

Another way for Apple to cut additional costs would be to make parts and packaging all within India as well. The iPhone 6S, on-the-other-hand, accounts for nearly one-third of total sales of iPhones in India previous year.

After contact manufacturer Wistron had begun assembly of iPhone SE models at its Bengaluru assembly plant a year ago, it's now the turn of the more high-end iPhone 6s Plus model to take its place. Once the iPhone 6S Plus starts manufacturing in India, you can expect the prices to dip a little, although since the phone isn't fully manufactured here, some taxes will still apply.
