Its first update, called The Hungering Deep, arrives in early May and adds a new, unique event to the game world, along with new mechanics, rewards, and a mysterious A.I. threat.

The Sea of Thieves content roadmap was revealed today and, starting in May, players will be getting new weekly events that feature new AI dangers, rewards, and gameplay mechanics to regularly freshen up the seafaring adventure. The weekly events, meanwhile, will help showcase brand-new content and give pirate crews fresh objectives to complete.

Rare is also deprioritizing the development of some previously announced features: pets, which will let players own parrots, cats and monkeys; and ship captaincy, a system that would allow legendary pirates to become captains of customizable ships. It launched on PC and Xbox One last month and quickly gained a following. Will this be enough to get you back into the game if you've stopped playing? That probably helped its launch numbers, but the big influx of players caused some server issues as well.

The developers are teasing a couple other additions to the Sea of Thieves formula as well, even mentioning bringing the underwater spaces into play a bit more. It looks like Rare is taking those complaints to heart.

Another new AI threat will be added to the summer content updated, titled Cursed Sails.

"This summer we'll debut Cursed Sails, which will include a new ship type, and Forsaken Shores, which will introduce players to a new perilous part of the world to explore", reads the blog. Rare will release three additional updates later on sometime during the calendar year. Possibly more exciting for players is a new ship type being introduced to Sea of Thieves. Executive Producer Joe Neate and Design Director Mike Chapman would not go into specifics but explained a "new AI threat" will be introduced to the game along with a new item, new unlocks, and new ways to bring crews together in the game world.
