'World Stands United': Boris Johnson on US, UK, French Missiles Attack on Syria

UK Prime Minister Theresa May's Statement on Syria Strikes

He said there is no doubt the Syrian government is responsible, and it had "crossed a red line".

Speaking from the White House on Friday, president Donald Trump announced the military action, and said its intention was to degrade Syrian chemical weapons capabilities.

Konashenkov said that Russian Federation knew "for sure" that between April 3-6, the White Helmets - a group which helps civilians in opposition-held territory in Syria - were "under severe pressure specifically from London to produce as quickly as possible this pre-planned provocation".

May has repeatedly said that the missile strike on Syria was not about "regime change".

"We have hit a specific and limited set of targets", she said.

"I believe it should also be a message to others that the worldwide community is not going to stand by and allow chemical weapons to be used with impunity." she asserted.

This is the first time as Prime Minister that I have had to take the decision to commit our armed forces in combat - and it is not a decision I have taken lightly.

The Prime Minister defended her Government's decision to carry out air strikes in Syria, claiming the air strikes were in Britain's national interest.

Britain's defence ministry said in a statement that four British Tornado jets had fired Storm Shadow missiles at the Syrian base 24 km west of Homs at 0100 GMT.

Dozens of civilians were killed in the chemical weapons attack in Douma.

Although the British government on Saturday defended its decision to join the USA -led military strikes on Syria without consulting Parliament first, British opinion leaders immediately questioned about the Whitehall's legal justification of such a military action. Western governments, including Britain, blamed the government of Bashar al-Assad, a Russian ally, for the attack.

For his part, the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Gerard Batten, opposed the British military action in Syria. "We can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalized - within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom, or anywhere else in our world".

President Trump said the three allies had "marshaled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality".

Former Prime Minister David Cameron lost a parliamentary vote on air strikes against Assad's forces in 2013 when 30 Conservative lawmakers voted against action, with many Britons wary of entering another conflict after intervention in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya failed to bring stability to the region.

Mrs May had earlier explained that there was no alternative to military action.

Igor Konashenkov, a Russian defense ministry spokesman, said: "We have ... evidence that proves Britain was directly involved in organizing this provocation".

"Bombing can not substitute for diplomacy", he said.
