Russia Claims Syria Chemical Attack Staged by Foreign Agents

Watch live: Sergey Lavrov could speak on Syria at press conference
Russian Federation is Syria's most important military ally in the country's civil war.
Zakharova also accused the United States and other mainstream media of inciting the attack, noting that the White House's decision to launch a strike was based on media reports, photo and video shared on the Internet and spread online.
Moscow also said it was calling an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, where it is a permanent member, to discuss the "aggressive actions" of the USA and its allies.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also claimed that following Syrian rebels' withdrawal from the eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus, stockpiles of chemical agents were allegedly found there.
The United States is discussing with allies a military response to an alleged gas attack by Syrian government forces on the town of Douma that killed dozens of people, which could lead to confrontation with Russian Federation.
A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to head to Douma, the site of the suspected attack.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump threatened to take military action against Syrian authorities over the suspected use of chemical agents in the city.
Lavrov said Russian Federation expects OPCW team to quickly visit the site. The Syrian government was ready to issue visas immediately on the border, without any additional delay. The government, however, said evacuations from Douma were ongoing and no Syrian government forces had entered the town.
Lavrov said that "intelligence agencies of a state that is now striving to spearhead a Russo-phobic campaign were involved in that fabrication". "They may be only welcomed by those who are overseas and expect to hide out while continuing efforts to destroy this entire region in order to keep advancing their geopolitical projects here", he added.
"A pre-designed scenario is being implemented", Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said on Twitter. The Russians accused the White Helmets and "other pseudo-humanitarian organizations headquartered in the United Kingdom and U.S." of working "hand in glove with terrorists" to provoke military action against Syrian dictator Bashar Assad.
"We are open for those contacts, they help to understand each other better", Lavrov said.
