"To Iran and to Russian Federation, I ask, what kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"

Criticizing the United States and its allies for launching the missile strikes despite absence of any proven evidence regarding the use of chemical weapons by Syrian government, Iran's Foreign Ministry said America and its allies will assume responsibility for the regional and trans-regional consequences of this adventurism.

Mattis and Dunford acknowledged the strike was created to degrade Syria's chemical weapons capability without killing civilians or the many foreign fighters in Syria's multi-sided civil war, particularly those from Russian Federation.

At an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting called by Russian Federation, the three powers dismissed Moscow's accusations that they had violated worldwide law and the provisions of the U.N. Charter.

The Pentagon said Saturday that a series of military strikes on Syria carried out by a US-led coalition struck at the "heart" of Syria's chemical weapons program.

The suburban Damascus area targeted in the suspected chemical attack last Saturday was among a dwindling number of rebel-held areas as Assad expands his control.

Haley said USA is "locked and loaded" to strike Syria again if the regime uses toxic gas again.

Mrs May said it was likely the Assad regime was continuing "with some chemical weapons production".

- Syria has failed to fulfil an agreement to dismantle its chemical weapons store under the supervision of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, indicating it still has undeclared stocks.

McCausland said it also "shows that the worldwide community is not going to stand idly by and watch this particular, very important, global legal norm about the prohibition of the use of chemical weapons to go without a response".

This year, the USA and its allies had three targets: two storage facilities and one research center believed to be associated with the Syrian regime's chemical weapons program.

The officials were asked on what grounds the Pentagon determined the Assad administration used chemical weapons.

The strikes as conducted last night instill no fear nor uncertainty on the part of the Syrian regime.

The Pentagon clarified on Saturday that this year's strikes involved 105 missiles, compared to 59 last year.

Damascus skies erupt with service to air missile fire as the U.S. launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the Syrian capital Damascus early Saturday.

He said the missiles hit the "sweet spot", doing the expected level of damage while minimizing the unintentional release of toxic fumes that could be harmful to nearby civilians.

When pressed, he acknowledged some unspecified portion of Mr Assad's chemical arms infrastructure was not targeted.

"We can not stand by as Russian Federation trashes every worldwide norm that we stand for", Ms Haley said. "I suspect, however they'll think long and hard about it".

Assad's Barzah research and development center in Damascus was destroyed, McKenzie said.

"It does not exist anymore", he added.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the attack "necessary and appropriate".

And he thanked the United Kingdom and France "for their wisdom and the power of their fine military".

"We specifically identified these targets to mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved", Dunford told reporters, adding the USA military advised Russia of airspace that would be used in the strike but did not "pre-notify them".

The main town in Eastern Ghouta, and the last to have escaped government control, is Douma, the site of the alleged chemical attack on April 7 that prompted the unprecedented Western reaction.
