Trump says USA is striking Syria over its use of chemical weapons

Friday's strikes appear to signal Trump's willingness to draw the United States more deeply into the Syrian conflict. He says a "combined operation" with France and the United Kingdom is underway.

The allied operation comes a year after a US missile strike that Trump said was meant to deter Assad from further use of chemical weapons.

"I'm supportive of this targeted attack, carried out in partnership with our allies, on the source of these barbaric chemical weapons, but as I've said before, it needs to be part of a broader strategy".

Trump intends to stem the tide of drugs; illegal immigrants, including Middle East refugees; and criminals over the U.S. -Mexico border using the National Guard, as Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama did.

Macron said the attack was "limited to the Syrian regime's facilities enabling the production and employment of chemical weapons".

Mueller was looking for evidence that Trump had paid women to be silent after having alleged affairs with them during the 2016 Presidential campaign. The only remaining chemical weapons caches in Syria were in territories held by the Western-backed militants, such as Jaysh al-Islam (Army of Islam), who controlled Douma until their surrender on Monday.

Moments after the US, UK and France announced they were striking Syria at around 2am UK time, several consecutive large explosions were reported around Damascus.

"To Iran and to Russian Federation, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of men, women and children?"

The speaker said Trump could use existing authorization, which was approved after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Priest said the new version excludes several critical provisions that would have benefited the US had it not withdrawn from the agreement a year ago. He also condemned his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who promised in 2013 that they guaranteed the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the three targets were a scientific research center near Damascus, a chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs and a storage facility and command post near Homs.

"Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path or if it will join with civilized nations as a force for stability and peace", he said.

Other supporters of the president's action included House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn.

While the United States would significantly bolster the pact if it signed up, its entry would require intense negotiations - and current members will expect significant concessions from the American side.

Taro Aso, Japan's finance minister and deputy prime minister said that "if the news is true, we would welcome it".

Trump is betting that periodic shows of American force - in the form of missiles and fighter jets - can convince Assad and his backers not to use chemical weapons again.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he welcomed the overnight strikes. Last April, he ordered the strike of almost 60 Tomahawk missiles that destroyed a Syrian air base. In a statement Friday night, May called last weekend's chemical attack "pure horror".

The risk of an escalating trade war with China has panicked American farmers and ranchers, who send many of their products overseas.

Mr Trump's top economic adviser Larry Kudlow said in an interview on Thursday with The New York Times that the request to revisit the deal was somewhat spontaneous.
