Unnao rape case: Police lodges FIR against BJP MLA
Within hours of taking over the investigation, the CBI brought Sengar, who had remained untouched by the state police, to its office in Lucknow, where he was questioned for almost 16 hours before being taken into custody.
The case came into the limelight after the victim tried to immolate herself on Sunday outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence, alleging police inaction against Sengar.
A special team that the government had constituted to probe the case was disbanded and the state police refused to arrestKuldeep Singh Sengar, because the case was going to be probed by the CBI.
But the MLA alleges that the girl had been tutored to build a rape case against him following a family dispute over village supremacy, and her abduction a year ago and that the survivor and her kin pressed for his arrest for fear of destruction of evidence.
Earlier in the day, the medical examination of the 17-year-old rape victim was conducted at the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Lucknow amid tight security. The principal secretary (Home) and State Director General of Police (DGP) O P Singh said the MLA had not been named in the statement given before the magistrate earlier as the minor had said she feared for her life. He was allegedly fatally assaulted by the MLA's brother, and arrested on charges that he possessed an unlicensed firearm. Sources said then Unnao Superintendent of Police Neha Pandey and the incumbent district police chief Pushpanjali might also be questioned.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday reacted on the Unnao alleged rape incident and said that his government would not compromise on its policy of zero tolerance against crime and corruption. The police put the onus on the CBI to arrest the MLA, who has remained defiant and has dubbed allegations as a political conspiracy.
Senior state minister and spokesperson of the UP government, Siddharth Nath Singh, said the law will take its own course and lashed out at the opposition for "shedding crocodile tears" on the issue of safety of women. The government also made a decision to recommend a CBI investigation into the alleged murder of the rape survivor's father in judicial custody.
The next day, her father died in jail with the post-mortem examination report suggesting serious injuries on his body.
