GETTYTheresa May has ordered military action in Syria as part of a co-ordinated attack
Theresa May approved deployment of British forces in the missile strike against Syria after government lawyers told her it was lawful on humanitarian grounds.
"Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace", said Jeremy Corbyn, the veteran leftist leader of the main opposition Labour Party.
The UK has begun air strikes against Syrian chemical weapons sites.
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Syria's use of chemical weapons could not be tolerated but questioned whether the strikes would halt their use or contribute to ending the civil war.
Mr Johnson, speaking at a summit of European Union foreign ministers, stressed it was "not an attempt to change the tide of the war in Syria or to have regime change" and "the Syrian war in many ways will go on in its awful, miserable way".
Four Royal Air Force Tornado jets using Storm Shadow missiles had taken part in the attack on a military facility near Homs where it was assessed Syria had stockpiled chemicals, Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
"It is about a limited and targeted strike that does not further escalate tensions in the region and that does everything possible to prevent civilian casualties".
U.S. President Donald Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until the government of Assad stopped its use of chemical weapons.
The shadow of the 2003 invasion of Iraq still lingers in the corridors of Britain's parliament, when MPs backed then-prime minister Tony Blair in joining United States military action.
"It was right to take the action that we have done in the timing that we have done", she said.
"I have done so because I judge this action to be in Britain's national interest".
British lawmakers voted down taking military action against Damascus in 2013, in what was widely viewed as an assertion of parliamentary sovereignty on the use of force.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement that Canada stands with its allies and that it supports the decision " to take action to degrade the Assad regime's ability to launch chemical weapons attacks against its own people".
But they backed action in Iraq the following year, and again in Syria in 2015, strictly limiting strikes to targets of the Islamic State group.
