In exclusive interview, Comey calls Trump morally unfit for office

President Trump shown speaking in the White House Rose Garden on Thursday has been besieged by legal challenges

As Trump's legal storms converge in a New York courtroom he rages against former FBI chief Comey

Women believe Comey over Trump 54-25 per cent and nonwhites pick Comey over Trump 63-15 per cent.

Trump's tweets also contained increasingly incendiary charges against his Democratic Party opponents.

In his press tour, Comey is sure to be asked to weigh in on Trump and the various twists and turns in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election as well as any potential links between Russia and Trump campaign associates.

Ayone who can see "moral equivalence" in protests by white supremacists and people who oppose them, who treats women like "pieces of meat" and who "lies constantly" and insists Americans believe it is "not fit to be president of the U.S. on moral grounds", Comey said in an interview on ABC.

'And that's not a policy statement. "Again, I don't care what your views are on guns or immigration or taxes".

"His leadership is transactional, ego-driven and about personal loyalty", wrote Comey, according to the New York Times, continuing the unprecedented assault on a sitting US President by a high government official.

"I don't think he's medically unfit to be president".

"I mean, I don't know whether it was weird for President-elect Trump, but I- it was nearly an out-of-body experience for me", Comey said of his meeting with then-president-elect Trump.

He also said it was possible Russian Federation was holding something over Mr Trump. "Values matter. This President does not reflect the values of this country".

Throughout the interview, Comey stressed the importance of telling the truth, a theme in his book.

Comey said he does not know "what's behind" Trump's reluctance to criticise Russian President Vladimir Putin in public. "He is morally unfit to be President". "It's possible, but I don't know".

Comey said he thinks there's "certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice" in Trump's actions.

'You can't say for certain that the president of the United States is not compromised by the Russians?' pressed Stephanopoulos.

"Truth matters, integrity matters", Mr Comey said.

Comey said he didn't believe the allegation, but feared that if it ever came out, it would destroy the credibility of the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Comey spoke out two days before the release of his memoir, A Higher Loyalty.

In his tweet, Trump says: "Unbelievably, James Comey states that Polls, where Crooked Hillary was leading, were a factor in the handling (stupidly) of the Clinton Email probe".

After his time working with the president, Comey says he believes Trump is unfit for his job. He believes Americans are "duty bound" to "go to the voting booth and vote their values".

Comey is not the first to make such an allegation, but he is definitely not afraid to repeat it: Donald Trump runs his White House like a so-called "Mob Boss".

Comey said he urged Kelly to remain in the administration. Because I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump.

In calling Comey a leaker, Trump is likely referring to the notes Comey admitted to leaking to his friend. "Did that trigger the FBI investigation in any way?" asked Stephanopoulos.

"I don't know what they talked about". One, as a counter intelligence person I'm thinking, "That's crazy-" without any Americans being present, one.

When he told senators he felt "mildly nauseous" that he might have impacted the election, Donald Trump was so pissed that he moved ahead with firing him.

During one of his first encounters with Trump, Comey briefed him about the memo. "But I never saw".
