Local Reaction On Speaker Paul Ryan's Announcement

Paul Ryan’s retirement A ‘self-promotion’ that makes sense

Brendan Buck, counselor to the speaker, said Ryan would "run through the tape" by fundraising for other conservatives and passing legislation. "I'm not concerned about it at all".

Ryan announced his plans at a closed-door meeting of House Republicans.

After months of speculation that he would retire, the 48-year-old Republican speaker announced his decision, setting up a struggle for succession among House Republicans amid mounting concern about the party's prospects in November.

The speaker's retirement launched a thousand sinking-ship metaphors.

I can see why Ryan is scrambled.

"Paul Ryan's name is right here", Halabi said as he pointed to the brick signed in 1988. This makes forward planning impossible and has effectively turned the speaker's office into the House GOP complaint department.

Republicans already face a tough challenge from Democrats to keep control of the lower chamber. He told reporters he believes he's leaving with strong accomplishments his party can sell to voters ahead of November elections.

In a daring speech on the Senate floor last October, Republican Senator Jeff Flake warned that the coarseness of the Trump era was becoming the "new normal" - a flash of "destructive politics" that could set the conservative cause back a generation.

Ryan insisted the looming prospect of returning to the minority wasn't a factor in his decision.

"You all know that I did not seek this job", he said.

Myers said Ryan's decision to drop out shouldn't change the approach for her or Bryce, saying any replacement for Ryan "will just be Ryan-lite". You get yelled at a lot.

Before the race to succeed him even officially got underway, outgoing Speaker Paul Ryan endorsed Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., in an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press" that will air Sunday.

A protracted leadership fight could make that worse.

"Speaker Ryan has done an incredible job during his time in Congress", August said in a statement. That deal also significantly raised United States military spending this year as demanded by Republicans.

Equally important might be who the party chooses as its new leader in the House.

Dent is among the ranks of retiring Republicans, and that status has led him to become much more blunt than many of his colleagues about how Trump has scrambled the GOP's identity and electoral prospects.

Bryce had raised a staggering amount of money for a House challenger, thanks in part to his national profile garnered from a viral introduction video and the fact that he is taking one of the most powerful Republicans. It's about loyalty to [President Trump]. McCarthy's relationships with several members of the California delegation go back decades - he served with Knight, Valadao and others both in the state legislature and in Congress. "He represents a different direction for the party, but also he is a whirlwind of a president and unpredictable", says Matthew Green, an expert on the speakership at Catholic University in Washington. "You're really in a no-win position if you're running in this cycle", he said, calling it a "pretty damn toxic political environment".

And because of that, Dent doesn't see Ryan's retirement as having any direct effect on GOP candidates' chances this fall. That's something-I'm not going away from life.
