Pravin Togadia quits as VHP International President

Former working president Pravin Togadia alleged irregularities in the election

Jolt for Togadia as V S Kokje elected VHP international president

I will continue to work for the welfare of Hindus.

Togadia has lately been at loggerheads with senior BJP leaders and had claimed that there was threat to his life. The decision after Togadia's aide Raghav Reddy was defeated by retired justice and former Himachal Pradesh governor VS Kokje in polling for the post of global president of the VHP.

Togadia's strong pro-Hindutva remarks were not in sync with Modi who was trying to reinvent himself for a larger national role.

Mr. Togadia's exit was not unexpected, especially after events in Bhubaneswar, and given his long-standing and public differences with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But he called gau-rakshaks 'gundas (goons). "I was shocked as this government has helped Pakistan-supporters", he went on to say.

Giving the details of his proposed indefinite hunger strike, Togadia said that it is meant for Hindus' welfare, construction of Ram Temple, ban on cow slaughter, Common Civil Code and Kashmiri Hindus.

Togadia alleged that there was an attempt to rig the elections.

Mr. Togadia has held that position since 2011, though he had been the driving force of the organisation since 2003.

Modi and Togadia, both of whom hail from Gujarat and started out as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteers, drifted apart in the last decade with Modi's rise. A few months ago, he dramatically disappeared from his office at the VHP office in Ahmedabad despite "Z" category security after a team of the Rajasthan police came to serve him a warrant in an old case. He also had a meeting with Patel quota agitation leader Hardik Patel, who had campaigned against the BJP.
