Russian Federation says U.S. will want dialogue after Syria strikes

UN rejects Russian call to condemn Syria strikes

Russia says alleged chemical attack in Syria was ‘staged,’ UK had ‘direct involvement

The sanctions follow US -led airstrikes against Syria's chemical weapons capability and President Trump's promise that Assad and his allies, namely Moscow, would pay a "big price" for enabling the use of chemical weapons.

"We put facts contrary to your myths", he said.

The US' keenness to strike stemmed from its charge that the Syrian government had attacked a rebel-held enclave within the country with chemical weapons, killing about 50 people, and the West says it draws the line at chemical weapons, whose use is banned in worldwide law.

The Russian measure would have condemned the "aggression" against Syria and demanded that the three allies refrain from any further strike. And it would establish a new body to determine responsibility for chemical attacks, call for a cease-fire in Syria, unimpeded access for all humanitarian aid, and an urgent resumption of negotiations on a political settlement.

In an earlier statement following the strikes, Haley said the Donald Trump administration was ready to launch more missiles in case of any further chemical attacks in Syria.

The leaders of Russia, Iran and the Hezbollah group in Lebanon said Sunday that Western airstrikes on their ally, Syria, have complicated prospects for a political settlement to the country's seven-year conflict.

Trump tweeted Sunday that the strike was "perfectly carried out" and that "the only way the Fake News Media could demean was by my use of the term "Mission Accomplished." He added that he knew the media would "seize" on the phrase, but said it should be used often.

Addressing told the council, Haley said the United States was confident that the military strikes had crippled Syria's chemical weapons program.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on U.S. television on April 15 that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin would announce the new sanctions on April 16.

"You are not only placing yourselves above global law, but you are trying to re-write worldwide law", Nebenzia said after the vote. "This is not about trying to turn the tide of the conflict in Syria", he told the BBC, adding that Russian Federation was the only country able to pressure Assad to negotiate an end to the conflict.

Oil prices fell, however, as geopolitical tensions were somewhat eased by signs that there would be no significant retaliation in response to a US-led air strike on Syria over the weekend.

"And what's most important is no one contests that the use of chemical weapons can not be tolerated and must be deterred", he said. What happens next, she said, is up to Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies.
