Russia warns of war over Syria strikes
There is a heightened "danger of escalation" because of the Russian military presence in Syria, Nebenzia said after a private meeting of the UN Security Council in NY.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on Facebook that the United States and its allies delivered a military strike against Syria precisely at a moment when the country has a chance for a peaceful future.
The Russian leader warned against "ill-considered and risky actions ... that would have consequences beyond conjecture".
Speaking to Fox News, the founder of the National Security Institute claimed it was time Russian Federation and Iran paid the price for supporting Syrian President Assad's regime following a series of US-UK-French military strikes aimed at the Syrian government forces on Saturday.
In a statement, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Australia supported the strikes, which sent "an unequivocal message to the Assad regime and its backers, Russian Federation and Iran, that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated".
It was unclear what the approach might mean for Russian and Iranian forces in Syria.
"At the end of the day, the Assad regime doesn't survive if the Russians and Iranians don't back him".
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow has "irrefutable information that it was another fabrication", after inspection by Russian chemical experts, according to The Associated Press.
Since taking office a year ago, Trump has tried to build stronger ties with Putin.
Trump has singled out Russian President Vladimir Putin for his support of Assad, as well as Iran. Last year, the USA launched a retaliatory strike after one was said to have taken place in Khan Sheikhoun. As a result, Washington, and its allies - France and the United Kingdom - fired missiles on the Syrian facilities, which they claimed were linked with chemical weapons production.
"The worst apprehensions have come true", Antonov said in a tweet reported by ABC News.
What has Trump said about the attack?
"On the one hand, not hitting Assad harder would be a sign of weakness".
On the ground in Syria, rebels in Eastern Ghouta surrendered their heavy weapons and their leader left the enclave, signalling the end of one of the bloodiest assaults of the seven-year war and a major win for the Assad regime. "We know for a fact that on April 3-6, there has been strong pressure exactly from London on representatives of the so-called White Helmets for the prompt execution of the pre-planned provocation", a Russian military spokesman told reporters.
He accused the United States, France and Britain of "demonstrating a blatant disregard for worldwide law".
